Untrained

Went to see my sister’s boyfriend in a dance piece that was part of Dance Massive. It was called Untrained and the premise was that two untrained non-dancers (but who are visual artists) and two trained dancers would be paired for the show. It was interesting – the differences in movement and movement skills were almost mocking on occasion but funny on other occasions.

I’m a late twenty early mid-thirty something guy who lives in Portland, Oregon. I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia via Sydney and a few other places.

I work in computing – specifically as Director of Operations for Puppet Labs – and I write technical books of which I have four published and another on the way.

My interests include cooking, wine, political theory, photojournalism, philosophy, poetry. I enjoy good conversation, laughter, reading, music, and my cats. Things that piss me off are jingoism, bad grammar, violence and cucumber.

P.S. I also have a sister who has complained about not being mentioned here – she lives in Melbourne, makes things with metal, curates and shops. Usually for shoes.

Magnum’s Vietnam snapper Philip Jones Griffith dies at 72

Amazing photographer Phillip Jones Griffith – author of Vietnam Inc has died. His work in Vietnam – both during the Vietnam War and afterward – to document the suffering of civilians significantly influenced world opinion of the war and the aftermath. His insight and ability to see into the heart of issues through photography will be sadly missed.

Japanese journalist confirmed dead in Myanmar

Our Man in Tokyo highlighted the death of journalist, Kenji Nagai, in Burma this week. Initial media reports suggested he was a victim of a stray bullet in the riots in Rangoon. Further information has emerged that suggests he was shot at point blank range whilst still attempting to photograph the demonstrations and the government’s crackdown on the pro-democracy movement. It brings the number of journalists killed in 2007 to 35.

Growing up with a journalist as a father and now having one as a girlfriend I’ve always been incredibly angry about how journalists and writers are so frequently persecuted, tortured, imprisoned and murdered. Destruction of a free press, the silencing of opposing voices and hiding the truth are always one of the first steps taken by any regime or government that wants to oppress its people. Journalists, both foreign and domestic, in many countries have borne the brunt of this sort of persecution and danger. Too many journalists die unknown and unremembered or are disappeared as an inconvenience. Sadly, this trend seems to be getting worse and worse.

New camera – advice wanted!

Okay. I know amongst my four readers that camera-buffdom is present in several cases. I want to buy a new camera. My requirements are very simple:

- Easy for an idiot like me to use
- Does a lot automatically and doesn’t require setting fiddling (but can be setting fiddled if required)
- Fast speed when you press the damn button and want to take the photo
- Zoom (flexible on how much etc)
- Relatively compact (not giant SLR sized)
- Good quality photographs (heap ‘o megazpixels)
- Good brand

Any advice?
