Music with funny accents

May 16th, 2008

There is something weird about my taste in music (*shut up Ruth*) but I am noticing a pattern recently.

Lately, I seem to be a little obsessed with music produced by women with funny accents. I listened to Billy Bragg and Kate Nash duet of “A New England” (not as good as the Kirsty MacColl and Bragg duet but okay…) and was all a flutter over Nash’s faux Cockney accent. Then I listened to a Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins duet of “From Little Things, Big Things Grow” and decided I absolutely loved some of the verses done in Higgin’s ’strine accent.

GetUp have released a single drawing on the Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody classic – From Little Things Big Things Grow – about the steps after saying sorry. It’s great and has Kelly, Carmody, Mia Dyson, Missy Higgins, and some Herd peoples. You can buy the track for the tiny amount of $1.69 with proceeds going to Aboriginal welfare groups. Go buy it. Now.

It’s also got a great video which you can watch at GetUp’s campaign site.
