Grant McLennan from the Go-Between dies aged 48

May 7th, 2006

Grant McLennan from the Go-Betweens has died in Brisbane aged 48. The Go-Betweens were one of the seminal Australian bands – part of the Brisbane scene that had a string of bands that prospered under the Bjelke-Petersen regime despite all its attempts to crush any alternative culture and music. Vale.

A thousand posts

May 6th, 2006

I didn’t even notice it but I passed one thousand posts a few posts ago. This site has been going since December of 2001 and I managed to have over a thousand inane things to say in that period. Shucks.

Target advert

May 6th, 2006

Does anyone understand the latest Target ad? There a woman searching for a top. She can’t find it. She goes out into the corridor and two girls (a daughter and her girlfriend?) who are holding hands walk down the stairs. She looks funny at them and they walk by. Then a much younger girl (another daughter?) also comes down the stairs wearing an oversize (and presumably the missing) shirt. Huh? Capise? it some sort of critique of teenage lesbian love? That missing clothes should be blamed homosexual teenagers? Weirdness.

P.S. Yes I know – I need a life – or to start writing another – otherwise my brain goes into overdrive and does things like over-analyse Target ads… More weirdness.

Geographically challenged

May 5th, 2006

This story downright scary. I have often cited an old Economist article which did a similar survey during the first Gulf and where most Americans couldn’t find Iraq the map – indeed several respondents who indicated some weird places at being Iraq – the Falklands and North Dakota for example. Seems the situation little changed. And what’s worse apparently 1/3 of those surveyed couldn’t find Louisiana the map. I can find probably most US states approximately the map – I get a little lost up New England way – and indeed I even know the capital cities of most US states – and I don’t even sodding live there. Americans you should be ashamed.
