Thanks be to those wonderful people at the Perl beginners mailing list. They have provided much arse-saving information for my new project - a Perl script blocking brute force SSHD attacks. Though I confess I couldn’t get any of the excellent advice to work - which is likely to be my shortcoming I suspect - but it has put me on the right path. I cut a, slightly flawed, first release of the script on Sourceforge a couple of days ago. Hopefully can throw some time at the final problem tomorrow and then do a second release after that.

P.S. I don’t have skin cancer and hopefully R will now stop nagging me about it - no news on the lung cancer.
