Wave of sadness after Hester hangs himself

March 28th, 2005

Rest in peace Paul Hester.

Why do I kid myself
Why do I scream for pleasure
It’s four in the morning should know better
But she can weave a spell
Want it to last forever
Making me feel like somebody special

Can’t carry this way (just go to sleep)
Before it gets too late (just go to sleep)
Doing damage to my brain
Well here we go again

Though I look everywhere
I never seem to find it
Always a shadow around a corner
Drown it in alcohol
Stuck in the elevator
Hard to remember in the morning

Can’t carry this way (just go to sleep)
Before it gets too late (just go to sleep)
Doing damage to my brain
Well here we go again

Tell you about myself
If you’re in the mood to listen
Baby you don’t know who you’re kissing
This a lonely world
You are a strange companion
When you get what you wanted
You want to leave

Honestly I want to free myself
From the burden of inaction
Honestly I want to raise myself
To any plane I can imagine

Can’t carry this way (just go to sleep)
Before it gets too late (just go to sleep)
Doing damage to my brain
Well here we go again

“Can’t Carry ” from Crowded House, Crowded House, 1986.

Who’s on first?

March 23rd, 2005

From Crikey:

PS: Here’s an update the famous Abbott & Costello “Who’s First” routine:

COSTELLO: “Tony, are you first?”
ABBOTT: “No, it now appears I was second.”

Let’s make weblog content authorised

March 20th, 2005

Another politican shows his deep grasp of the inner workings of the Internet. Eric Abetz, the unfortunately titled Special Minister for State, wants webloggers to put their names to their content in the same way other political commentary authorised. A lot of the weblogging have naturally reacted badly. Personally I am going to ignore it for three reasons:

1. It’s never going to be legally enforceable outside Australia – especially in the US where 1st Amendment rights cover this sort of material.

2. It’s operationally unworkable due to the deep failure of the government to understand how the Internet works (as previously shown by the Government’s plans to block child pornography and copyright violations).

3. Who cares? So the government or a Minister sues me? That’ll generate far more publicity than any little weblog post would. Might even be my 15 minutes of fame. :)

Eric Bana and my Humber

March 19th, 2005

So I am channel hopping whilst I am procrastinating writing this article. And I see this car. A Humber. A rather distinctive gray Humber with a white roof. And I realise it’s my Humber. Being driven by Eric Bana. See I bought mine from a mob that provided cars for film and and they obviously used it for Bana’s rather short-lived TV comedy series. Weird, small world.

Lightfoot’s cash smuggling denial credible: PM

March 17th, 2005

Credible? This government? Yet another example of the Government and the Prime Minister completely disregarding the now tattered joke of a of Conduct established after the 1996 Federal Election.

And people wonder why women think we’re scum…

Now I am not a perfect bloke – indeed far from it – but this story just takes the cake. There are some damn freaky, fucked up people out there.

Solzhenitsyn

March 15th, 2005

“It was only when I lay there rotting prison straw that I sensed within myself the first stirrings of good. Gradually, it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes, not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either, but right through every human heart, and through all humans hearts. So, bless you, prison, for having been in my life.”

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago

Words I had read before. Words with new meaning. It passes through all our hearts and it these words that shame us all with our greed, hate, anger and fear. We will never learn anything whilst we cannot see that all human hearts see both good and evil and it we that make judgements and we that make choices. Too many people fear that choice.

Type 1 diabetes: islet cell therapy is not a cure yet

March 12th, 2005

This some of the most promising news 1 Diabetes I’ve seen in years. Totally excited about it. Gives hope for a lot of people (including my other half) that the burden the disease imposes may be lifted some day.
