Latham’s Lament from Ausculture.com

September 29th, 2004

Oh and give this here a listen. Very funny.

Howard’s a scrote
So give Mark your vote
Won’t you please?

He’s a battler, a hard man, a hater
Passion, it rules Mark’s life
It’s what led to all his lady friends
And really pissed off his ex wife
He’s not afraid to call it as he sees it
If you’re kissing some arse he’s gonna let you know…

Magic.

Exhausted and file systems 2

September 29th, 2004

Finished Chapter 4 and the edits Chapter 2. Am now incredibly tired. Edits for Chapter 5 over the next day or so and then start the last two chapters – DNS/Bind and FTP. The end in sight. I can’t bloody wait.

Renovations also proceeding. Finished in the next month or so I hope. Will be so glad to get back home and into the house. Lu and I are so over being in this rental place. The cats too are going slowly mad. Romeo and Mitsu hang around the doors and yowl now.

When all of this over I am going to sleep for a month.

More tripwires

September 27th, 2004

Madly finishing the last section of my current chapter with some material Tripwire. Actually rather enjoying this section. The highlight of an otherwise depressing weekend.

Life’s tripwire

September 26th, 2004

My grandfather died Saturday morning. Peacefully. They gave him some painkillers. He drifted off to sleep and never woke up. Glad I got to see him a couple of weeks ago and glad he knew what was going in my life and glad he got to meet Lu and glad he got to know I was happy.

Going to for the funeral Thursday.

Humber Medicine

September 24th, 2004

So back to discussing my car. The Humber got blue slip-ed. A few things wrong – king pins totally fucked, a few minor electrical things, one dud tyre and rust. A fair bit of rust. Looking for a rust and body specialist in to fix it all. The mechanic I found will fix everything else. Also do a reasonable full service and fix the battery leads. Also ordered some rear windscreen rubber and will have to re-install the rear windscreen. Also have to work out if I can fix the little hole in the roof or whether the body peoples can do that too. Then need to get all this done in 28 days or however long the blue slip / white slip lasts.

Things to do:

1. Green slip CTP.
2. Find out about seat-belts and see if the mechanic can install them.
3. Find some new ignition leads or at least the Bakelite caps.
4. Find the rest of the leaks in the car.

Some other dude did it – again

September 22nd, 2004

So the Liberals may have been sprung doing something unethical? Again. What a surprise. Howard’s response?

Even if there was substance to Mr Windsor’s allegations, Mr Howard said, he could not be held to blame, because it would have been done without “my knowledge my authority, my approval”.

Hi John. It’s me again. You know that bit where you said it would have been done without your approval, knowledge or authority? Doesn’t make an iota of difference. You are the leader of this government – you are responsible for this government’s actions. Real men don’t weasel.

Throat mayhem

September 21st, 2004

At home today with a bloody nasty sore throat. Almost zero sleep last night. Am shortly going to crash out now because I have another damn early morning. Hoping to hell the tow truck driver comes to pick up my car in the morning. Tomorrow going to be a long, long day.

Enough Rope with Dave Hughes

September 20th, 2004

I first saw Dave Hughes doing standup with Amy at the Armadale – must be seven years ago now. Amy’s cousin ran the Tuesday comedy night and I
saw a lot of damn fine gigs – Merrick’s (of Merrick & Russo fame) first gig not being one of them. But a regular hit of Greg Fleet was pretty damn cool. And then there was Dave Hughes – this odd looking, weird guy who was massively self-deprecating and mocked his relationships and a lack of a sex life. Now at 33 he still a bloody funny man. Denton’s interview with him was simply brilliant. Made my evening of illness much more pleasant.

P.S. In case anyone doesn’t know – Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono a scary chap. He served a number of tours in East Timor under Wiranto. Then
was Chief of Territorial Affairs in the TNI whilst the final bloodshed occurred in East Timor. He not a nice fellow and now looks to be President of Indonesia. Worrying.

Blue Slip

September 19th, 2004

Taking the new wheels to be blue-slipped tomorrow. Starting point to working out how many mortgage payments are needed to get the wheels road-worthy. Oh dear… :(

Exhausted and file systems

September 18th, 2004

Totally and utterly exhausted. This last few chapters (2.5 left) are going to be a real killer. This chapter proving a real bitch of a thing. I have two painful topics: encrypting file systems using dm_crypt and file system ACLs. Both of which are a real fucking nightmare to setup and test. I think I have broken the back of file system encryption tonight but I am too tired to continue to document it and I am making far too many mistakes.

And Belle & Sebastian running Rage – very cool playlist – I am currently singing along to Kristy MacColl covering Billy Bragg’s “A New England”.

P.S. Anyone who feels like buying me a copy of VMWare Workstation 4.5 would earn my external gratitude. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Damn might have to out the cash myself. It’s an awesome product. A real life saver at the moment. Now if I could only get VMWare Tools working I could also cut-and-paste out of the Virtual Machines.
