May 31st, 2004When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you
May 28th, 2004If it came down to it would you commit an act of political violence and when would that act be justified? By ‘came down to it’ I mean if you felt there was no choice, that you must act to defend some right or liberty or oppose some decision made by your government? Whether you were an oppressed minority trying to protect yourself or a member of the so-called ‘silent majority’ opposing some decision by a government you felt represented a minority or different view? Or fighting to protect your home and family from some form of governmental oppression? Or can the concept of political violence be extended to include the use of a nation or government’s armed forces as an extension of the politician’s or occasionally even the people’s will?
Would you kill for your beliefs? Would you kill for a principal? Would you ask, pay or demand that someone else kill for you? When would putting a kilo of Semtex in a public place be a justificable act? Or bombing an apartment building to kill a sniper? Would your targets be uniformed (or non-uniformed) officials of that government or organisation? Or are its civilian members legitimate targets too? Children? Is targeting children justifiable? Or using so-called unorthodox tactics – rape, maiming, mutilation? Is the lose of innocent life an unfortunate byproduct of political violence? Is anyone an innocent bystander? Can you justify killing the guilty by association? Even if that association is purely geographical?
Recently I ask myself that question everyday. I know what my answer is. A categorical rejection of the use of violence for political ends. A categorical rejection of the use of violence for any ends. But too many times recently people I know have justified some new act of violence and bloodshed in the name of freedom and democracy, to protect us and our way of life, to stop terrorists or simply in self-defense. It is a slippery slope. Each justification takes us a little further from pretending we even have the veneer of civilisation left. We are slowly cutting slices off the fig leaf that covers our high moral ground. We are becoming the monsters we have demonised and we are breeding more monsters of our own. Both on our side and theirs. It’s a zero sum game. As Neitzsche’s aphorism states: “When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you”.
No obligation to prisoners
May 27th, 2004Australia had discharged its moral responsibilities in regard to the Iraqi prisoner abuse issue, Prime Minister John Howard said today.
Mr Howard said Australian troops had not been involved in the abuse and humiliation of Iraqis captured by coalition forces and there was no obligation on the government to take their treatment up with the United States.
“We didn’t have any prisoners in Iraq within our control and care. On all occasions when prisoners were in contact with Australian forces, they were actually in the custody and control in a legal sense of American and not of Australians.”

No obligation my sainted arse and John Howard’s legalese ‘we never had any prisoners’ shite spin just doesn’t wash. We handed over prisoners to US custody. Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War anyone? Oh yes we are in violation of Articles 5, 6 and 12 – essentially handing over prisoners of war to a party to the conflict who is not abiding by the Geneva Convention. And Articles 8 and 11 explicitly give us not only the right but the obligation as a party to the conflict to assess the treatment of prisoners by other parties to the conflict if we fear they are violating the Convention. “No obligation” shows the distinct lack of moral courage of the Australian Government.
Govt to outlaw gay, lesbian marriage.
May 27th, 2004Yet again the Howard government gets involved in matters that shouldn’t be their concern. It should not be in the purview of the State to dictate whether consenting adults can marry. Another example of the 1950s bigotry of the current government.
Name Statistics – How popular are your first and last names?
May 27th, 2004My word. Stole this from Beth at Miaow the Cat. It seems James is the most popular boy’s name in the United States according to the US Census. Weird. I never would have thought it was a popular name. You come across a few but I would have thought it was John or Michael – which only make it into 2nd and 4th place respectively – the top five being – James, John, Robert, Michael, and William. Still a lot of very biblical names. Jose gets a look in at 28th which is pretty much the only non-Anglo name in the top 30. I imagine that’ll change in the next 20-30 years.

30 around
May 22nd, 2004There was that season of 21st birthday parties when I was about that age. You know every weekend there’d be a 21st – some weekends you had one on a Friday and another on Saturday or had to hit two parties in a night. It was exhausting consuming that much booze.
And presents – buying presents for all those people – thankfully a bottle of some disgusting kind of alcohol was usually quite acceptable as a gift – especially if you managed to hang around long enough for the birthday boy or girl to open up their new present and drink it with them or if they were inebriated enough drink it for them.
Now it seems that that time has come around again. This time with 30th birthdays. Not as many as that deluge of 21st – I find I don’t know so many people anymore. Interestingly I am not sure quite how I knew so many people back then either. So tonight we are off to the Hurlestone Park Bowling Club for an 80s Rock ‘n Roll themed birthday. Scary… I am even costuming – the addition of a roll of gaffer tape to my belt – and coming as a roadie.

May 21st, 2004Live Journal and other time wasting distractions
May 19th, 2004I don’t know if I mentioned but Red Kat finally persuaded me to sign up to LJ (well Rane helped too by going all friends only posts me too
) so I could actually comment on people’s entries. This is proving distracting – mainly because I am becoming a grumpy old bastard and go hand to keyboard a little faster now. I am going to turn into one of those old guys who writes letters to the Editor soon. Oh ooops. I am one of those guys.
Also I realised I’ve been almost two years in this new job. Weird – time flies. Some news on the job front shortly.
